    Coconut Oil - removes cockleburs!

Have had springers for close to 40 years had never heard of using coconut oil. Have tried putting vaseline on their ears, sprayed pam on them and both worked but left a mess to clean up after the hunt. Now I clip the ears before the season starts and that usually solves burrs on the ears. I also...

    Ground swatting

Absolutely not. You shoot low or on the ground you would never hunt with me again.

    Dogs caught in SNARES!

Exactly have a pair in my vest along with a device to release conibear traps. Only had to use the cutters once and that was when we were hunting our family farm where no one had permission to trap. Sons griff got snare around her leg, luckily she stopped and stood still until we got her cut out...

    Warm + No Snow

Not a fan of shirt sleeve pheasant hunting in December. Been tough on the dog dry and windy make for some tough scenting conditions. I leave the house with a brown and white springer and come home with a grayish brown one. Definitely need colder weather to get the birds back in the cover after...

    Losing confidence in dog

If you are near central iowa there is a group of spaniel owners that used to train outside of Des Moines. If they are still together they should be able to help you out. One of the guys is married to the woman that runs ESSFT web site. Her name is Holly Boggus. Last contact info I had was...

    solo hunting

I will be 68 in January and approach hunting just like you. Hunt every other or every 3rd day and only until noon. Body needs a lot more recovery time than it did even 5 years ago. Wife and I will walk 3 to 5 miles daily weather permitting and I lift 3 days week at a gym to keep a level of...

    solo hunting

I prefer to hunt solo but the older I get the more I realize that probably isn't smart. As I close in on 70 it has become apparent that the old body doesn't withstand the rigors spending hours in the field as well as it once did. So the wife tags along or I take my son and 2 grandsons. Never was...

How often do you encounter the law?

The wife started going with me several years ago and the first thing I bought her was a license and habitat stamp. Like you said cost was minimal and the money goes to a good cause. I don't like anyone walking behind me because of the number of birds that flush behind you. I also agree with the...

    Hunting this weekend

We still hunt but only on private ground. Keep an eye out for who's hunting around us as the springer is mostly white and her tail is going constantly. If you go just be careful, you wouldn't believe some of the crap I've seen deer hunters do.

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

Excellent post. Finally some common sense. My springers have all been trained for a hard flush, the bird is either flying out of the cover or it's coming out in the dogs mouth. Roosters go in the vest and count towards my limit, on the rare occasion it's a hen its dropped in the weeds and we...

2023 Iowa bird hunt pics and/or stories

Shot gun starts Saturday and ends 17th. I agree that there is large segment of hunters that only go opener but are no where to be seen the rest of the season. I swear that most of the hunters I saw on opener looked like the walked out of a orvis catalog , all new gear.

2023 Iowa bird hunt pics and/or stories

Saw more groups out opening weekend but very few since. I drove by 4 public spots saturday around 8 and none of them had hunters on them. Hunted for couple hours and never heard any shots and never saw any other hunters. This was a little strange as the weekend after Thanksgiving is usually...

    Iowa vs Kansas

Don't know about the DNR's formula but the last 3 years we have had both milder winters and perfect spring nesting conditions. The decline in our numbers was a combination of declining crp acres and a string of 4-5 years of hard winters and crappie wet/cold springs. The area where I hunt has...

    Retrieving

Glock is right the longer this goes on the harder it will be to correct. You could try hunting them one at a time which gives you a fresh dog for the next spot. If this isn't what you want then you need to work on steadying them.to wing and shot.

Just a friendly reminder about retrieving birds over the property line

I would ring its neck dude. Didn't need to get a lecture from KEO about killing it on private property.

Just a friendly reminder about retrieving birds over the property line

Never said kill it on private land. You can retrieve a wounded pheasant and dispatch it at your vehicle. Dont know many people that ditch hunt deer.

Just a friendly reminder about retrieving birds over the property line

Might want to look at the current ia hunting regulations. Last paragraph on page 14 says an unarmed person can take the most direct route to retrieve any lawfully injured or dead game animal or furbearer, that falls or crosses into the property of another.
