South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I saw a day last week that it was 97 degrees in Pierre. That is HOT for late September.

    Forecast for the Opener

2023 was the hottest September on record...until 2024, which is now the hottest AND driest September on record. I did not record any measureable rain the entire month. And there is none in the 7 day forecast. As far as I can see, temps look above normal. Average this time of year is 68...

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

Is anyone else worried about how hot and dry its been lately? Obviously being so dry heading into hunting season isn't anything new, but dryness on the landscape can greatly reduce the amount of scent birds leave, inhibiting dog work. Over here in MN we have not recorded a single drop of rain...

    prairie chicken

That is so cool. Nice job. We just recorded the warmest September ever. And last year is now the second warmest. Its like hunting during the middle of summer now.

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

Except for the fact that its required by state law. At least here it is. And in my book, not being shot is more important than bagging birds. If someone showed up in my group and started making uneccesary noise before the hunt, they would not be invited with again. This is one of the primary...

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

I hunt 100% private, untouched land. No one else hunts it for pheasants. I do not hunt in a group though. I hunt either by myself or with 1 other person. Before we get to the spot we intend to hunt, I tell them no noise. People yelling at dogs, slamming truck doors, and barking out "hen!"...

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

It always amazes me how some hunters are unaware or unassuming of the noise they make before they start hunting. And then you have those dip shits who yell "rooster!" or "hen!" too.

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

Boots on the ground is always a better scouting mission than an online report, or lack thereof. Especially if its in the immediate area you intend to hunt. It'll only get better as there's less places to hide too, like a sea of standing corn.

    2024 Upland Season

Goose is the worst. So I believe you on that one. The dove poppers looked good. I'd try em.

Neither do I haha. I don't even know a fraction of that. Everyone I know hunts deer here.

    2024 Upland Season

Tons of leaves, tons of bugs, and tons of heat/humidity still out there. Its like hunting in the summer time right now. Barf September has essentially become an extension of the summer in terms of weather.

    2024 Upland Season

Seems like now is just as good as a time as any being that grouse and dove season is open, and woodcock starts in 3 days. Post your Minnesota upland bird hunting strategies, photos, success, and failures for the upcoming season right here. Pheasants, grouse, woodcock, doves, prairie chicken...

    Looking for expert opinions

I'd go to a spot where there weren't other hunters, first and foremost. 1) out of respect, and 2) I have no desire to hunt ground already hunted and/or being hunted by others.

Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

Did that bill actually pass? I can't find anything that it passed. I saw it only as a proposed bill.

    Hunting with two dogs.

I agree with the above post on the younger dog. Quite often they become distracted by other dogs. Mine did when she first went afield around 6 months of age. There were 2 other older dogs trying to hunt and she thought it was more of a game. For the rest of that first season, I hunted her...

Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

I get it, sometimes a gas one is better. Its the right to choose that we should be making on our own, is my point. I remember when those battery/electric augers first came out and the ice crowd looked at them and thought they'd never be a thing. That's almost all you see now.

    Hunting during deer season

Guess I wouldn't necessarily consider the dedicated muzzle loader season to be "firearms" but technically that is an accurate assessment. The hunting pressure for that compared to the 9 day gun season isn't even remotely close though.

    Hunting during deer season

I agree, its dumb. Archery/crossbow (which was just added last year for everyone), early youth season, early anterless season, muzzle loader season, etc. Its too much. Its gotten out of hand. I don't suppport and I don't participate. The waterfowl situation is just as bad now. Early teal...

    Hunting during deer season

I am. Its a respect thing for me. If I know someone is stand hunting a specific parcel, I stay out of there. Because if I was in their shoes, which I sometimes am, I would want and expect the same from another hunter or group of hunters. The thing is with deer firearms season, its very...
