    KDWPT Wildlife Commission

You've lost me. What's the fix? Recovering a "fair share" of PR funds? Do you know how PR funds are allocated...or where that money comes from? You said on multiple occasions that the problem was non-residents leasing land? How would getting its "fair share" of tax money collected almost...

    KDWPT Wildlife Commission

Seems like a bad idea to pursue that line of discussion, because I think it leads directly to a violation of this board's policy on political discussions (if it already hasn't). To answer your first question, you are (one of) the one(s) spouting: "core issue which is - how many of those...

    KDWPT Wildlife Commission

I didn't read that thread. I thought it was about paying for single day access to hunt private land in Kansas, and I didn't have anything to contribute, or much interest in the topic. Feel free to cut and paste my comments over there if it floats your boat.

    KDWPT Wildlife Commission

I hate to be the bearer of news Kansans can't stomach but the solution, like the problems, is largely political, and this forum is pleasant in no small part because it's devoid of the political horror show that's allowed elsewhere. But I'll try to minimize the partisan aspects as much as...

Cut and paste away. I'll sit back and enjoy another round of watching Kansas residents cry about how the free market they love to worship so much actually works.

Kansas could ban all out of state hunting next season and the number of resident hunters would still continue to fall. Everybody loves a scapegoat, but there's a level of delusion at play here that is remarkable.

    My take on Kansas

Whelp, I finally got out to Kansas for a couple days. I really missed being out there. I hunted all private, in the northern third of the state, from 281 west to Colorado. Flushed upwards of 100 pheasants in 2.5 days (only got blanked on one farm, hunting center pivot corners), 1 covey of quail...

    Best hunting pup for pheasants

It's a dog, usually owned by a bit of a fop, who freezes in quivering fear at the scent of a bird, then watches in horror and amazement as the master who feeds and shelters it walks in front of its cone of terror and kicks at brush and grass clumps until a bird lifts from the ground, then shoots...

    My take on Kansas

Yeah, I guess I should make clear that I don't relish the thought of what will happen financially to the people who farm the land, though the system of modern sharecropping disguised as farming doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about the "people" who own most of the land in the great plains...

    My take on Kansas

The optimist in me believes that once they run the aquifer dry, the death spiral of western Kansas will accelerate to the point that I will get to see large swaths of it return to shortgrass prairie. Maybe the grouse will come back.

    Best hunting pup for pheasants

Oh, that wasn't an insult. It's just not a bird dog. Might be a hunting dog, or a gun dog. But not a bird dog.

    My take on Kansas

It would take about 25 years of perfect weather to undo the damage that's been done to Kansas upland hunting by the last 5-10 years of habitat loss. If agricultural and land stewardship practices don't change, it's done for. It's not really worth fretting about. Just kill them until their gone...

Glen Elder ( Rabbit Hunting )

I have rarely been bird hunting in Kansas and not kicked up at least one bunny. I often wished I'd gotten into beagles instead of pheasant dogs.

    How's the season so far?

I've been out once in Kansas, between weather, a bout with COVID and other trips, I just haven't had time for my normal forays into my home state. That one time I was out, I was chasing quail in Northeast KS, saw no quail, shot 3 roosters between 8 and noon and called it a day. I'm having...

    Unfriendly Kansas. What's happened here?

Kansans aren't particularly friendly (they are often fairly courteous, though). That said, I'm not sure I'd judge the character of a people based on the attitude of their game wardens.

    The Tale of Two Hunts

I hunt alone probably 75% of the time, with 1 or 2 friends the other 24.9% and I do (or did until COVID got me) 1 large group hunt per year and as much as I love hunting solo, I love the occasional group hunt just as much. For one thing, it feels a lot more traditional and old-school Kansas to...

    Hunter numbers

I hope the people who have rediscovered the outdoors this year keep enjoying it long after the pandemic is over. And that their new or renewed interest helps them think about public space, conservation, and wildlife in ways that have been forgotten by a large segment of the population, I think...
