Well ... SW MN is a little depressing

October is supposed to be hunting grass and edges. Too much snow too early. All the prairie grass is laid flat and it is a tough walk. Saw very few other hunters. Not one public spot was occupied on Saturday, October 24th. The spots we stopped to look over, glass, and/or walk ... not...

Farmers and Hunters aging. Recruitment issues in farming too.

Interesting USDA article. Farmers aging as fast as hunters. Haymaker maybe surprised but I come from a pretty rural and very farm based ancestry. It is interesting to note that of all my relatives by birth and marriage, I can count two that stayed on the farm with their parents...

University of Minnesota promoting Wild Rye to displace buckthorn. This could be bad

University of Minnesota has a buckthorn replacement project "Cover Up". One strategy is to use other plants to displace buckthorn once the buckthorn is pulled or cut back. They are promoting wild rye as one way to displace the buckthorn. This project could end up spreading more wild rye...

    Big Blue Stem

I have been hunting across a broader range of Minnesota the past week to 10 days. I have not visited some of these areas for a year or two (maybe longer). I have noticed that the Minnesota DNR has gone crazy in planting huge areas of big blue stem grass in most of their "managed" WMAs. In...

    Not So Sweet (Sweet Clover)

Most of us that hunt pheasants know that patches of sweet clover can be a pheasant spot to check, but that said ... I was hunting an area of MN that used to be really good for me years ago. Not a core area, but can be good. Had to shorten the drive to make the day work. To my dismay ...

    Ticks

Ticks were out on Thursday. One dog must have went through a "nest" of them. May not be out again for a little while, but keep that in mind when temps hit 40s and 50s again.

    Garmin Astro 430

So what upgrades does the Astro 430 really offer over the 320 ?? Anyone running the 430 unit yet ?? I see one negative, my second (back up) DC40 collar would not run with the new unit.

    NO

This November storm is targeting prime MN pheasant country. If the cattail sloughs fill with snow now ... they may never really freeze or have pockets of very weak ice.

    Lotta

Roosters are everywhere this spring crowing. Seeing and hearing them in very marginal MN pheasant range. Deeper into pheasant range they seem to be busy keeping each other (roosters) in check. Hens are running with the roosters in the morning. Nesting will be early this year ... let's hope...
