South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

Rain would be welcome for sure. However, crops should mature/dry faster and harvest may be sooner. A bonus for early season hunters.

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

Where’s Benelli Banger? He was the best “boots on the ground” update man. Hope he’s ok.

    Crazy weather

Why is that so shocking? “Peak Hatch” is approximately June 10th. Some chicks are hatched around 6/1. Those birds are almost a month old.

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

I’m not too worried about this rain. Had this happened when the majority of hens were still on Nests then yes but I think the bulk of the chicks are on the ground now and it’s not going be a cold rain so I think we’ll be OK.. any hens that are currently sitting on eggs. If those do get washed...

    Happy June 10th!

Happy Peak SD Pheasant Hatch! June 10th is noted as the “peak” when hens are hatching their broods. Conditions are excellent at this point and we should see lots of birds come October. So let's raise a glass to the hens who allow us to all yell ROOSTER!!!!

    Unguided hunt…

Good Private land with spoil you. We have a big group so need many birds to keep the masses happy. If it’s just the two of you, public ground should be just fine. Scout after sunrise and hunt next to standing corn as birds will come back to grass to roost before sunset.

    Overall season bird numbers

Now that the season is over, would you say your area had more, less or same amount of birds? We hunted NC part of state private ground end of October. I would say birds were up a little in our area despite lots of corn still standing.

    Early season thoughts

We are hunting NC part of state. Bird numbers down a little from last year. Our area had 25 inches of snow in April.

    The harvest is on!

There are “hard” freezes beginning tonight in SoDak with lows in the teens. That should help get them going again in the fields.

    Low Hunter numbers

Mike, we are headed to Aberdeen area on Saturday. Where are you headed?

    Low Hunter numbers

This year Chain O Lakes state park is now closed for controlled Pheasant hunting. Silver Springs state park is back to being run by the state and has reduced its days per week from 5 down to 3. Des Plains Conservation area remains the same for now but when you look at the available permits there...

4, 5, or 6 shot for you early season pheasant hunters? And what choke are you shooting?

The best advice I received when I first went to SD was you want to “kill” that bird not just knock ‘em down. So I go 1-1/4oz #5 first few weeks of season then to #4’s around mid November. Modified choke for me.
