    Must Haves?

I bought a tiny propane grill this year, should be a game changer.

    Must Haves?

I’m always looks for ways to improve the trip.. So, for those of you who travel a ways to hunt and stay in hotels/airbnbs, outside of the essentials (gun, boots, good dogs, etc.) what are some items you bring with that have improved your trips? For me bringing a good lawn chair and vacuum...

One thing that always sticks with me

Hotel is booked for the first week of the season.. fingers crossed for cool temps and at least some crops out!

Yup, I said it, west river, and a promise to the dog

It’s all about the dogs for me.. at this point in the year my dogs have given up hope that we’ll ever hunt again. They think their purpose is to happily lay on the couch and chase the occasional squirrel in the backyard. Once the season begins the switch flips back and I’m not even allowed to...

Workout / train (humans, not dogs) for upcoming season

I lift a few times per week and play football and basketball when I can.. I'm adding 100 or so flights of stairs into the mix every few days until the season starts so that you can't hear me huffing and puffing when I record my hunts for YouTube.

Another first timer to SD Post

IMO you should give yourself every advantage you can when hunting pheasants.. that being said I'd shoot Bismuth 4's or 5's when lead isn't an option. It's about $2 per trigger pull so I can see why a lot of people stick with steel. I've also heard of people having issues with Bismuth shot...

    Can I have all three?

lol, it’s mostly a joke, but depends how fired up they are.. they’ll bump a bird from time to time, but the majority of the time I get nice points..

    Can I have all three?

Is it possible to get all 3... Huns, Sharpies, and no fear of rattlesnakes in September? I usually head to South Dakota in October to pheasant hunt, but I've always wanted to get a head start on the action and hunt in September. I wanted to get to MT but that's a bit further away, and it sounds...

    First time Pheasant Trip SD

That first week can be awesome.. as others have mentioned it can be hot, but I'd argue the hunting pressure isn't much worse than other times of the year. I primarily hunt around one of the "hotspots" in the state and the last few years I didn't see that many people opening week. I also get out...

    Retrieves everything except birds...

For whatever reason, my youngest setter, Larry, won't bring back pheasants. He's more than happy to brings back balls, toys, socks, etc.. Literally anything I throw for him he'll bring back. When we're out hunting he finds dead birds and pins cripples, but then he decides it is time to pull...

    First Bird Dog

The training really starts today, basic commands and recall might be the most important things to have dialed in before you head out.. You absolutely should get him out in the field as early (if properly introduced to gunfire beforehand) and as often as possible IMO. I had both of my dogs out...

    Recommend some dog boots please.

This is the way... but I would sub out 1" electrical tape for the duct tape. Duct tape is made to tear straight across and that feature has cost me a boot or two. So far, knock on wood, I haven't lost a boot using electrical tape.

    Let’s see them Setters!

Yup, likely the only kind of dogs I'll ever own. If the burrs would be easier to comb from their hair they'd be perfect!

    2023/2024 Pheasant Hunting Videos

I posted this about a week ago, but the end of the video cut off for whatever reason.. I've been in a ridiculous pheasant slump, so I haven't been very motivated to upload anything. Going on about 4 hunts without jumping a rooster... really fun times! Anyways, here's a couple videos from my last...

    Where to go in December?

That time of year is the best IMO… especially if you and your dog want to bust your a$$ through the cattails, because that’s where all the birds are going to be. It takes the guess work out of it, because the birds will be in the thickest nastiest cover near food. Snow shoes make it easier, but...

    2023/2024 Pheasant Hunting Videos

Appreciate that, Larry definitely started to figure out the running birds last trip.. hoping this trip he really dials it in and that Marty can pace himself a bit in the heat and hold a couple nice points.. oh, and it’d help (my bank account) if I could hit a few birds on the first shot.
