    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

It's been a great thread honestly. One of the reasons I like upland hunting is because you can talk while hunting and you don't mess up an entire days hunt by being too loud at the wrong time like with big game. But it's certainly true that the birds get more spooked when you are overly loud...

Unintended Consequences of being a Pheasant Hunter

A case with a port cover is requirement for me. Solves the problem of dirt and dust getting into it.

    Dusky grouse habitat

This is one of the most important things although maybe also the easiest thing to automatically be in. Dusky don't like flying straight up very often. If they can glide away and land in a tree lower than them, they do that. Depending on time of year, fringe meadows are the best. A lot of bugs...

Help with 5 month old lab encouraging retrieving

I'm far from a trainer. But check cord so he can't play keep away is a must. Also keep the repetitions low so it doesn't become work. I'm also a believer that dogs can easily learn the difference between play and work. So use a bumper for work and enforce the commands, but then also have fun...

    Garmin Alpha 100 VS 200/300

Awesome thanks for showing that. At 4:45ish he also mentions the annoying alpha 100 lock so I agree they removed it. I still think I'll wait a little bit on the 300 but maybe as a Christmas present to my self instead of waiting for the 100 to break.

    Garmin Alpha 100 VS 200/300

Do you know for a fact that part is fixed? It annoys me so much I turn off beeps but that means I get no beeps for things like lost signal and out of range which I miss. Just can't put up with extra beeps for screen touches.

    Garmin Alpha 100 VS 200/300

Bumping because I'm interested in this as well. Had the alpha 100 for 4 years and it's been good. A lot of useful things in the 300i since I do use an inreach for my hunting. And the longer battery life is a major thing for me. But $850 when I already have a working unit is hard to justify. From...

    Hunting With A Backpack

I run a strap vest which works well. For water those plastic bladders are awesome. As you run out of water they pack smaller so in theory you replace that water volume with birds in the big pouch. Pretty small gear pack but I like minimalist approach so I can move quicker.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

I feel like I struck a nerve here. I simply picked an example of a top state one might make a trip to. Me not mentioning other states doesn't mean they don't have good pheasant hunting there.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

I didn't say to see what real pheasant hunting is. But at its prime. South Dakota has had almost twice as much pheasants harvested per hunter than any other state. That's a lot more birds. I think any of use would be happy to see twice as many birds than we have.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Not gonna lie, I don't think I can go hunt those areas. It's gonna make my home area way more depressing. I think ignorance can be bliss in this case. I'll stick with taking my shotgun for a walk. It's great exercise.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

We truly don't have that many birds. And yeah edges are the priority but being alone I do a zig zag pattern so push into the field and then push toward the edge to get the bird pinned and flushed. I would say 9/10 times I see my dogs birdied, we get a flush. They just don't get that birdied that...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Yeah I probably need to get out to ND or SD to see what real pheasant hunting can be like. We have to work very hard for our birds with how few we have.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

100-150 yards to each side. So 200-300 yard swaths. But you don't need to hit those swatchs right next to each other. I'll typically do 2 there and backs on those sections which makes for 5ish miles. That assumes the dogs are getting birdied in the field. It's not uncommon around us to do those...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

A half square mile. So like a 1/2 by 1 mile section. You walk 1 mile down and then quarter mile in and back. You've done 2.5 miles of walking and covered 2/3 of the area depending on grass thickness and how much your dogs run.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

How little do you walk that a half square is big? If you walk down and back you've covered 2/3s of that property. Not much room left for a stranger to hop in the same field.

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

Yup, they'll be the primary bird I'll be targeting which they are one of my favorite birds. Otherwise I'll be chasing chukar and maybe some quail.

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

Recently moved to a new area (Western Slopes Colorado). Basically have been exploring all the new public lands, since April I've hiked an average of 9 miles and 2,200 ft gain/week and the dogs have done 18 miles and 3500ft gain/week. This is probably going to be my most in shape season.

    New GPS collars

The antenna does matter. It's what sends the GPS data to the handheld from the collar, not just the e-collar functions. You get more range with the long antenna.

    Boss shotshells?

Last year I went through to find a good non toxic shell and I wasn't very impressed with the boss patterning. They had a lot more fliers and clumping than I expected. But I hear good things from people so I haven't fully written them off. The new "warchief" is buffered so I'm hoping that might...
