Congrats Remy, nothing like hunting late season when the birds are grouped up and they are smart.

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Guys, I love to hunt as much as the next guy, but we should be prudent with the resource and let the birds be. Even on the nice days if you kick them out of the cover they are really exposed to the avian predators. If you decide to go, safe travels.

Remy, pretty impressive…. Trees, water and nesting/winter cover and foot plots you have it all. I own 160 acres is SD and have a similar setup, but not as much CRP. The CRP contract is only 3 years old, but what a difference!

Remy, curious as to how many roosters you will shoot off that quarter of CRP? You have food plots as well? Build it and they will come.

Pay to Play rates in SD

So true, I am in a similar situation. I have some CRP but need the income from cash rent to pay for taxes and other bills. I also kind of use the analogy, if you own a body shop do you charge people to fix the cars? Of course, that’s your livelihood…. Seems pretty simple.

Pay to Play rates in SD

As I said earlier in the thread, same debate year over year. Can we agree that you need habitat to have birds. How do you get that habitat in the ground? Farmers should be paid to leave habitat in the ground. If it is state land you prefer then your tax dollars and the money you spend on...

Pay to Play rates in SD

Every year this debate goes on. If we don’t have farmers leaving habitat we will have no birds. Yes, habitat costs money… nothing is free anymore. If you prefer not to pay , so be it… That is a beautiful thing about this country.

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

Great point, if it was good news they would market the hell out of it to drive the NR hunters to the state. I wish I could say things were going to get better but the trend is down for habitat= wild birds.

    The future of bird hunting

I enrolled 25 acres of the land I own in the SD habitat legacy program. It had to be farmland and I was paid 30 dollars per acre. After I paid them to plant and then the upkeep not to mention the taxes I did not do it for the money. I want the habitat to raise the birds. It’s expensive to...

    Bird numbers

Bird numbers are way up. We hunt in Western MN and the area we are in seems to have doubled over last year

    South Dakota 2020

Was out Thanksgiving week as well and based on what I saw the population is way down. We shot limits 2 of the 3 days we hunted but shot well and did not miss any birds. The birds on the roads in the mornings and evenings was non existent. The heavy rains in June and early July did us in. All...

    Brood counts

We just can’t seem to stay clear of those big rains. No doubt some hens will have to re nest.

    Brood counts

Weather has been favorable for nesting conditions. If we can get some timely rains and stay away from the severe weather we should see a decent batch.

    New to the forum

New to the forum but have followed this board for a couple of years. I will be heading out for my annual turkey hunt west River in a couple of weeks and will be traveling through the kimball/platte area to check on things. I purchased land a couple of years back and I am adding a new shelter...
