    Pheasant Industry in SD

Not all SD stocking releases occur on a dedicated pheasant preserve. Preserves have a broader season length, no limits, and a whole unique set of rules. What are the rules for letting go a few hundred roosters on simple SD private land ?

    Pheasant Industry in SD

Much of the big-time pheasant industry in SD is geared to guided, all-inclusive hunts. Many of the clients fly into SD on commercial planes and many more come in on their own planes. They are treated to high end lodging and "gourmet" meals. They load up in buses and walk in large lines...

    Sore paws

Western Dakotas and western Nebraska ... scoria / rocky terrain, cactus, etc ... are especially tough on dog's paws. Almost looks more like the dog was hunting on hard crust snow or ice and breaking through a bit on every step.

Lets See Your Dogs..post some pic's

Rooster was probably one of the longer shots I have taken in some time. Landed blind over a hill along a cattail infested creek a bit too deep for me to cross. Bird was pointed close but did not establish it was a rooster right away because of the sun. I walked up a few hundred yards and...

    The flush

There are a lot of retired boomers out there with nothing but time on their hands and money to burn. There are quite a few 30–45-year-olds out there that hit it big on the net, live off their parent's dime, and/or have no children and travel on a whim too. That crowd seems to be more...

    The flush

The viewership for those shows such as the Flush and RoosterTails are simply pheasant hunters now a bit board in the off season ... few if any people channel surfing stop and watch a program like that. Assume these shows come to Bally's or whatever channel with prepackaged advertising...

    Bells on flushers

I used a bell on my Brittanys from 80s to early 2010s. I (we) have killed a lot of roosters across many states. Anyone that says bells scare 'em all away does not know what they are talking about. Bells were extremely effective to know where your dog was in high grass, thick woods, cattail...

    Bells on flushers

Have you ever hunted in tall bluestem grass in an area that had ample rainfall in the growing season ? Tall bluestem can easily reach 5-6 feet and be thick as thick can be. I would say ... yes ... use a bell. There are people that hunt with flushers that are moving hard through the cover ...

Lets See Your Dogs..post some pic's

Younger dog above. Nine year vet below. Had them pinned along a soybean field (but their crop said they fed in the harvested corn field across the road) ... he had them pinned there for almost two minutes. Garmin beep said on point ... took a while for me to get there.

Hunting Quietly.. unfollowing hunting social media will make hunting better

I rarely if ever watch a hunting video on YouTube but know that several "creators" have resulted in public land areas be infiltrated with people. I will admit I have never watched a single video post of Bob's, Golden Hour's or A5's (or any other) on you tube and fairly sure I have not opened a...

    The flush

Out of hiatus for a brief post. Schara was a better outdoors writer (Minneapolis StarTribune) than an outdoor show host. His show often hunted some of the top private land spots in SD. I cannot take his speaking style. Bob Peters is absolutely correct. Flush and Rooster Tales are...

    The dog caught a pheasant

You all just missed the pellet. Likely an injured bird from this weekend. On several occasions, I have picked up roosters in from of my dog's points ... most are injured birds, but a few I have let go and they flew away. Absolutely wild birds.

    State released pheasant

I have shot quite a few ND pen raised birds in the 80s. I have never found one dead or partially eaten. ND used to band their released birds so that made it a bit interesting. This was pre-CRP and in the Red River Valley where the only cover was located on the few GMAs. I found a hen...

How far do you let your dogs go?

My Britts use their big kennel in our dining room as a place to go chill ... sometimes they get off the couch and head to the back of kennel for some total quiet time.
