I also introduce on neutral ground. These 2 got along great. The older lab was 7 years old at the time of introduction.

    Why I love labs

My pup on her first hunting blind retrieve at 9-months. She got the duck after about 10 minutes of chasing.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Alcohol should be avoided due to high purine content for anyone susceptible to gout from uric acid crystals. Alcohol-associated liver disease is the leading cause of the need for liver transplants in the US. Alcohol can also damage brain cells...

I've seen some pretty amazing Drats and GSP in terms of duck retrievers.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Besides not drinking alcohol or smoking, I don't eat beef. For 30 years, diet consisted of salmon, moose, caribou, birds. All my blood test results are good...cholesterol, glucose, LDL/HDL, etc. which I attribute to diet and daily exercise (age 67). I never had a cavity which I attribute to not...

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

I started with a Visla, then English Setters, then for the past 30+ years labs. I like labs because I can hunt a sea of cattails, forest grouse, alpine tundra or wide open western landscapes. I can hunt the lab out at 200 yards or by my side depending on what I am hunting. Plus labs are...

    Why I love labs

I worked at the University in Fairbanks and remember seeing 2 chocolate labs sitting in the back of a pickup behind the ONeill Building. They were used by a arctic marine scientist for locating seal holes on sea ice. The scientist was Brendan Kelly...this was the mid 1990s...

    Why I love labs

I've been fortunate, have had working labs since the 1980s and no health problems, no joint problems, all have lived to 13-15 years. Maybe it is the type of lab?...mine are no stout.

    Giardia in Dogs

I've always had 2 labs and no problems with giardia, but our little rescue dog got giardia bad and I assume that was from the labs. The little dog was pretty sick but recovered after treatment. The labs swim in beaver territory most everyday and likely giardia is endemic to them while the...

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

All my canoes lasted many decades. Great investments that have served me well.

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

I also have a Stihl that is about 20 years old and a little Husky that is 30 years old. One day I was tired from humping up avalanche chutes after blue grouse in Idaho. Coming down a Forest Service road, around a corner there is a giant ponderosa pine that fell over blocking the road. Easy to...

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

Another item is a Rapala fillet glove which I wear whenever I use a knife in the field. It takes me about 4 hours to deal with a bull moose alone, and often under head-lamp, so use of a fillet glove has prevented cuts many times over the years.

    Moving To Orofino

I used to live in Moscow, ID. We went to Orofino to fish for steelhead in the spring, kokanee in the fall and winter. Turkey hunting was great back then. Pheasant hunting was not great but huns, chuckars, quail was good at lower elevations and blue grouse in September was fun at cooler and...

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

Leupold optics, all my big game rifles have Leupold scopes that are 30 years old and withstood the harsh weather of Alaska. Thermorest sleeping pads, most of mine are over 30 years old. Made in USA.

    Pheasant Hunting

Alaska spoiled me in terms of fishing...gave away all my gear when we moved to Montana. That (fishing) and big game hunting chapters are closed in my life. I'd rather hunt birds, shoot sporting clays and train retrievers.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

I wonder if I am the only non-drinker on this forum? I do drink coffee but no alcohol, no carbonated soft drinks. I've always been a health nut and physical fitness freak.
