Is there a general rule of thumb for dog miles on a hunt?

It depends. The best days with 2 hunters finding lots of birds the dogs put in the least mileage. 3 or more hunters, chasing quail, big country and decent bird populations you’re looking at 15+ A day. I run mine 4 days in a row.

    Is South Dakota just hype?

Don’t want to take anything away from SD pheasant hunting, but you need to know they wild release tens to hundreds of thousands birds each year. I actually think with today’s science all these conservation departments should be exploring a way to seed populations to drive abundance populations...

Have to give them more instructions😉

I train at grounds where a NAVDA chapter has their Sat/Sun meet up training days almost every weekend. Way too much liberated bird work. Dogs are mechanical and obedient, but when the training grounds wild release pheasants they all struggle. They’re not needed beyond early breaking and...

    Recovery

A couple of thoughts. Dogs get their energy from fat. Move to a food that is above 20% fat and at least 30% protein. If you put your dogs on the ground day after day and for more than 3+ hours a day, they get depleted in a hurry. I run pointers and typically have them on the ground 4 days all...

When do we start the push for change?

Great post! I've hunted some of the same ground for years and the farms have all kinds of cover that used to hold 5-6 coveys and now have 2. cover matters, spring weather matters, but there is more in play here and it points to farming practices and chemical.

    Thoughts on 2021 in Missouri

Spent the last 10 days hunting MO. Mostly private ground. Bird numbers are just not there compared to the last 2-3 years. Majority of the coveys were ~10 birds.

    Kennel Covers necessary under Topper?

botton line, toppers only go so far. when you get below 40 degrees, do your buddy a favor and start to cover to varying degree the crate. They burn alot of energy generating heat thatonly takes aways from the energy needed in the field.

    Plug question

Never understood why you would need more than 3 shells at any one time for upland hunting. Unless a really delayed flush with multiple birds, which that is the exception, shot 4 or 5 success is such low probability from what I've observed from my hunting buddies. And if you're a cracker jack...

    Pheasants at night

They're ground nesting and ground roosting birds. Will they fly into a tree, yes, but its the exception.

    Dew claws?

I think the number of dogs that tear a dew claw is so few. Can it happen yes. By removing do you eliminate a potential injury, yes. likehihood of that specific injury, low. remove them if you'd like. I personally don't.

Best way to plant pen raised quail for hunting?

Fly them out a day or two before

    Dog’s feet

Pre-conditioning is the very best to develop tough feet. It requires them spending lots of time on the ground running, not in the backyard or walks through the neighborhood. When they do get sore feet during the season, epsom salt does wonders. Soaking them for 10 minutes of an evening once...
