Best chokes for #4 shot in a 16 ga.

I have used Imp. Cyl, and No. 5 shot in a 16 ga Winchester Model 12 for years. Works great. Like Golden Pheasant ammo. MG

    Effective shot density

No need to over think it. If the pattern is evenly covered over a 25 to 30 inch circle, it should be fine. I normally use Imp Cyl in a repeater and quality No. 5 shot. I don't shoot past about 30 yards and have had good success over the last 20 years. I like no, 5 lead much better than no...

    Why full choke?

Back in the day, most people were not wing shooters. They used a shotgun like a rifle that was easier to hit with. They used it for everything including deer hunting. Full choke was considered a better buy because they "Shot Harder". If you went down to the local Hardware Store and bought a...

    Habitat stamp Required

Well, that is just one more strike against hunting SD again. I really enjoyed it for years hunting 1999 until 2016. After 2011 there were fewer and fewer birds each year. I have been hunting in Kansas since 2017. Lot of birds and the license is good for the year. I was thinking about a trip...

    Heading West Once More

Another fast year and another trip to South Dakota. The good Lord has granted me another trip with good friends. I'll be leaving in the morning. The reports say the birds are down but there will be 100% more that there are around home! Good luck to all and a safe hunt. MG :D

    Heading West 2016

Time is moving. I'll be leaving for South Dakota one week from tomorrow. I didn't make it last year, only the second miss since 1999. I will be hunting a new place this year near Redfield. The old place was sold as the owner passed away. Things change. My old hunting partner said that...

    100 Years Old

I was just thinking, the Winchester Model 12 is 100 years old. With all the changes in technology, it does the job just as well today as then. That's something! Lock and Load! :D

    Home from Redfield SD.......Birds!

We just returned home from hunting near Redfield last night. The bird numbers didn't seem to be down much if any. We brought home 26 birds for the two of us so we were just 4 birds short of our limit for five days of hunting. We missed a few so there is no excuse there! Our best luck was...

    Floods

From watching weather reports, I can see that South Dakota has had a lot of snow this year. Is serious flooding expected? The first time I hunted in SD was in 1999. There was still lots of water around from the snows in 1998. Lock and Load! :D

    Head'in West

It begins. I'm heading for South Dakota next Thrusday. Always a great time! I was wondering, does anyone have a special tactic or type of cover they like to hunt or use in the early season? With all the experience on this forum, I'm sure some have a "Pet" idea that's worked in the past...
