Ground-pounding opinions

My safety has been off before by accident and if a bird flushes and I don’t feel the click it is totally weird and I’m frozen and fiddling with the safety…probably don’t get the bird
Yeah that’s me. My old Citori doesn’t always reset the safety and even after firing a ton of shells through it I have accidentally pulled up on a bird and switched it on instead of off. You would think I would not get that flustered when a bird gets up but I still do

35-40 years ago while duck hunting on pelican lake near Orr, Mn, 2 of us per blind, 10 yards apart looking out at the lake…nothing happening…deadsville…BOOM!!!!!….wtf?….younger guy, 16?…in other blind was doing god knows what! Found out those 2 don’t keep safety’s on, including the host, who was 28? 30? Island named after his family, prominent name…doesn’t matter, stupid is stupid!!!!

My dad (not a big hunter) took my older brother deer hunting the first time. Back then it was shotgun only. He had bought my brother an 870 20ga.

As they were walking out to the blind they were going to sit in KABOOM!. A big clod of dirt goes up next to dad's foot. Brother had forgotten which way the safety would be when it was on or off, so to test he pulled the trigger.

Same brother nearly killed my when he shot a .22cal bullet through my hair from 12 feet away joking around in the family room when I was 11 years old. Needless to say, he now lives in New York City.

I think you're gonna have a hard time getting guys to admit they hunt with their safeties off. There's a lot of judgment that's thrown around when you find out a guy doesn't like keeping his safety on. I may not agree with it, but I'm not going to sit here and say it's impossible to be safe when you're walking around with a safety off.

Two things on the safety bit. I’m fine with muzzle up or down, I’ve seen folks fall and if the muzzle is up, who knows where it goes on the way down. Muzzle down has its own problems, pointed in a safe direction is fine. I have hunted with a fellow who walks with it horizontal, an older guy. I walk a few steps behind him and to his right.

Safety wise with my automatic I slip my finger in the trigger guard and slip the safety off all while pulling the gun up. This only when I see a rooster flush.

What about when you see a hen flush?

Well you know it’s one of those ingrained automatic things a person does without thinking and it is hard to sit here and try and remember.

I guess it depends on a lot of things. Any flush my finger is in the trigger guard, a dog getting birdy or on point the same thing. If I see right away it’s a hen then that is as far as it goes, finger probably stays there for a count or two since many times a rooster will be soon after, the gun may come up or not. If it takes a few moments to determine it’s a hen then probably the safety has been slid off.

I don’t think there is any such thing as a 100% safe method of carrying or mounting sequence. That’s why always pointing the muzzle in a safe direction is so important. I’ve never had a negligent discharge, I saw my father have two when he was getting probably too old to be handling a firearm. But he was following the primary rule of a safe direction so no damage other than to his ego. He shortly after quit shooting. Kinda like driving, better to quit too soon than too late. Lots of things are like that.

Safety goes off during gun mount after I have identified a rooster. Only time a rooster is shot on the ground is when it's wounded and no dog is close and it might get away

I used to hunt with this guy that he was an okay Hunter, but he was getting an ass whipping from me as usual, and I watched him sluice a rooster over on a hillside, but I didn't say anything cuz I knew he was going to be skunked that day for sure. But I didn't want to bust his balls. But it was kind of low brow.
