Need some help

Prairie Drifter

Well-known member
The Prairie Drifter is retiring the end of this year. I couldn't find a home in the country and am buying a house in town. As a result, I have to cut my dog numbers from 15 to 5. I have 3 females I will give to good homes that are 8 and 9 years of age. I have 1 grandson of Tomoka, 1 grandson of Shadow Oak Bo, and 1 male out of a grandson of Tomoka and True Citizen, and 1 female granddaughter of Shadow Oak Bo that I am taking offers on. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up well bred males to inject into your breeding program. This is extremely hard for me. Thank you for any consideration!!!

Some pictures and more information would always be helpful. Size, coloring, hunting range, health, etc. Have they been worked lately or have they just been in a breeding program. What level have they been trained to. I would be highly interested in a male or female if they were ready to hunt today or just needed some polishing up. I don't breed, but hunt 75+ days on covey birds.

This is Torch. He is a grandson of Pine Hill Morgan, Pine Hill Pearl, Tomoka, and Ruffian. He is 9 years old. All of these dogs have found and pointed birds. I haven't hunted the last few years due to health problems and major work projects. All my pictures are when they were being trained. Seems I can't use a camera if a shotgun is in hand.

This is Quill. She is 9 and a granddaughter of Brannigan, Ruffian, Mesquite Ridge Kosmo, and Prairie Drifter Sage. She has whelped in the kitchen and could make a house dog. Very stylish on birds. Girls I'm giving to good homes.Quill.jpg

This is Rain. She is 6 and has had 3 nice litters for me and the pups have received good reports. She and her brother, Briar, are for sale, make an offer. They are grand get of Shadow Oak Bo out of my dog Quill above. 20191117_155205_resized.jpg

Drifter,
You are a true gentleman. Congratulations on your retirement. Thank you so much for all you have done for the wildlife at Byron Walker. Thank you for the education you have provided at seminars, especially the patch burn/graze and for all the helpful information you have provided on UPH. Thank you for your friendship over the years.
Be well.
Your friend,
Maynard

God Bless Maynard! Gonna miss it, but my body is telling me that a younger dog needs to enter the fight. Can't surgically remove the physical stuff and retain the rest. Having trouble with my voice as well. May have to rely on a whistle!

I knew you were having issues with your voice. I added you and your wife to my daily prayer list years ago and you remain there today. So I think of you each and every day. I also think of you when I see the beautiful yellow blooms of partridge pea in my CRP and I thank you for that seed that continues to bless this land.

Thank you again Maynard! I'm sure, like your partridge pea, I have left long lasting finger prints along with my foot prints wherever my career took me. Wouldn't have it any other way. Much like my predecessor, I'm sure I wasn't always right, but I can't be accused of not giving it my best effort! I've touched a lot of people and a lot of acres over the past 44 years! I'm hoping most folks saw that as more positive than negative! I'm sure with the law enforcement for the past 35+ years, some of those folks won't! However, I've always sided on the side of wildlife and the laws that protect them! It's been an enjoyable trip! Many great memories! I've giving so many people their first ___________, or their best ________. I know I've created monsters much like myself!😁

Drifter,
You are a good steward and have inspired others to follow that example.
Thanks,
Maynard

Maynard, I have had over 85 different employees at Byron Walker in my 33 years here. A minimum of 20 of those have gone on to work at full-time positions in the wildlife field that I know of. One of those is currently the Deputy Secretary of Operations for KDWP. I've always believed in hiring intelligent people and letting their intelligence influence the work we do. I wish I knew how many more have worked in the field. I'm sure I'm short a few.

I am thankful for the education you have provided me and those on this forum. I know that there is no doubt that you have done the same with those that worked for you and with you. Leave it better than you found it is quite a legacy to leave. Thank you for your time and friendship.
God Bless,
Maynard
