It took me a bit to figure this out but I found for the kind of one man-one dog hunting I do that I wanted to find a "fresh" straw stubblefield bordered by PLOTS that was thick cover. The birds were in the edge of the cover during the day, apparently sneaking out periodically to glean in the wheat stubble. Still saw way more hens than roosters.
When I say "fresh" straw,it was light in color. Some fields had a dark straw stubble that I assume was two years old, although it could just mean a different cereal crop than wheat. I assume there was a lot less spilled grain heads in the old field.
