Last Hunt of the Year???

Maybe the last go around of the year... Snow may be too deep for the Dog and my snowshoes broke last time out last season! We will have to see. At least I went out with a bang taking 4 of these, the stars were in line as they all tried to flush in front of me. I LOVE this sport!

DOC-I was thinking the same thing and maybe others can give their opinion on this what is to much snow for the dogs to hunt in?
Nice pic  what part of the state did u hunt and how much snow was on the ground?

Doc, that's impressive in these conditions. Judging by the snow depths it looks like much of the state is unhuntable:(

SC MN near the Windom area, No technical measurement of the snow other then "Balls Deep"!!! Yes, these 5 Birds were in fact all trophy roosters considering the effort that was put out to get them, ALL Day RELENTLESS PURSUIT, and we were after number 6 right up to closing time, he jumped early on us 4 times and then it was just too last.

Nce job. Late season birds are well earned:thumbsup:

Did you tap the keg behind you after the hunt?

That one was already empty my friend, I wish there would have been a spare. Actually we ran out of light for the photo outside so we went up to the land owners shop/bar to do the pic. this is 160 acres of CPR/CREP/Riverbottom land with NO house on it, just a shed that houses running water, electricity, poker table, Keg-a-rator!! Pretty sweet setup!

Since the snow keeps coming....

My cousin, uncle and I got out yesterday to beat through the snow and cattails. We could have gotten our limits but we're lousy shots. My ugly mug is the one in the middle

This may be our last hunt of the year.

Other than having sweated from head to tow and missed more shots than I care to mention, yesterday was a perfect day out there. Then again, not too many days hunting AREN'T perfect!

Nice job and I'm sure it was real work slogging through those cats. Another 5-7 inches due after tonight, so that should all but bury any available cover except shelter belts. Tough winter so far for the birds (oh wait winter doesn't start till tomorrow..)

They were saying even more coming on Thursday. YIPPEE! So much for hunting Christmas and New Year's weekends.

Let it snow!

Also went out on Sunday and hunted for a couple of hours. Saw tons of birds (mostly hens) but still fun to see 60+ birds in a few hours.
My 1 working gun wouldn't eject shells and I missed the first 2 birds with my single shot. Finally put 1 in the bag on the 3rd rooster.
I hope Santa brings me a gun for Christmas.

Really, really tough walking out there, but alot of fun!

Shorthairs, no kidding? On two really close birds, I couldn't get my gun to eject the first spent shell either. I typically refer to my first shell as "The Range Finder" because it rarely hits anything, I'm much better on second and, yes, third shells. Because of the jam, i was screwed...or at least that's the story I'm going with.

I'm going to have to talk to Santa (wife) during the off-season too about a new gun. Here's to wishing us BOTH luck with Santa!

Short hairs did you come up this way? Hope you seen my report back to ya. I was going to go Sun, but never made it out.I oppted to clean kennels, give 4 dogs baths and hair cuts. It took me most of the day. It's suprising how hard on a back it is standing hunched over a dog in the tub. I have to work a couple days, and then hope to get in a day or two the end of the week for one last time or two. All I want for Christmas is a retrieve for my dogs.:D Hope you guys get that new gun in your stockings.

I went out last Friday afternoon and found the going tough. Saw a few birds and got 1. Broke through the ice up to my crotch and called it a day. Is there anyplace a guy can get out and not have a foot plus of snow to trudge through?

Mnjimmer i hunted from jackson to worthington sunday and on the drive down on hwy60 once u started to get south of windom it got less and less snow on the ground i would say between those to towns there is 7-10 on the ground with of course a drift here and there but others wise it was the easiest walking i could find!

I think FCSpringer stated that up in his neck of the woods (Alex) their wasn't as much. I also read a report from the DNR that the Glenwood area has much less than areas further south. I know where I am in Wright county we are sitting on 30 inches on the ground so far this year. From the looks of the snow map link below, it looks like the far southern tier of counties along the Iowa border from south of Mankato west, have the least snow depth.

Here is an updated Mn snowfall map: http://www.weatherstreet.com/local_forecast_files/minnesota-snow-cover.htm

Lets just say I never plowed the last 2 snows and can still get in an out with my escort wagon.:D did get a little drizzle that made things very slippery though. I would say about 8"-10 roughly. But yea your going to trudge in some drifts. ditch is full so getting off the road is one of the worst spots. I am going to the IA MN area as long as the weather holds. Glad to see there is not 30 plus down there. I still see dirt in the fields so if you pick your route in to the cover it's manageable. A little crunchy now though, where before you could sneak in the fluff, now they will hear you coming for sure.
