Farmers ride the gravy train as Trump boosts welfare to the Heartland

In my long life I've never walked into a grocery store and found the shelves, reefers, and freezers anything but totally full of good food at affordable prices. This near miracle was possible due in part to government intervention in the ag market place. A farmer friend says he happily receives his government money when he thinks of the "free" money, free or subsidized housing, and free medical care welfare recipient's get for doing nothing while he has to work 355 days a year for his government money and has to pay someone to take care of his cattle during his 10-day annual vacation. Comparing welfare to government support for ag is a false equivalency.

I wish this thread would die quickly.

It’s naive at best to think you could discuss upland hunting in the midwest without discussing ag policy. Some people seem to think the agricultural industry is above reproach, but don’t seem to have much trouble spouting off a bunch of baseless myths about people getting welfare and “not doing anything”, which beyond being half a crock doesn’t have a thing to do with birds and bird hunting.

You just made my point why talk about it? let us talk about bird habitat and what we can do to help create more of it. Like for example what the Audubon Society and Blue Nest Beef are doing. It is very creative and anyone can help. If every person on this forum bought one box of beef from Blue Nest Beef every year you would be helping create more bird habitat. That would be a positive influence on habitat instead of worrying about what dumb thing the government just did. Go out and do something positive. The government is not going to fix this we need to.

Farm subsidies, nothing in it for the average person. If farmers go broke no big deal we will just get our food elsewhere. Or new farmers will take the ones who go broke spots. We can get by without food for a while. Or pay really high prices. Stupid government keeping food prices consistent. Farmers could adjust to free market food prices btw. Some years they’d be rich. Some years would be lean. The food consumers couldn’t. 2 reasons in my opinion the US is a super power. #1 we don’t have to rely on anyone for the most important resource “food” granted our other resources are important but without food or water the rest don’t matter. #2 logistically there is no way we can be invaded by a foreign power, unless Mexico or Canada turn dangerous.

SERIOUSLY DID YOU ACTUALLY READ THE DRIVIL. YOU WROTE—

MODERATORS—Time to step in—Some village is missing their idiot—or Mom locked the basement door—

Lol you can agree or disagree. Here’s what I know 100 percent. If we were discussing this face to face it would be civil. No way you’d call me an idiot face to face so why do it on this forum. I grew up on a family farm in Oklahoma farm subsidies aren’t handouts they help consumers more than farmers. What are you so angry about. I’m a 25 year educator also btw never been called an idiot.

Obviously—I mistook what you were really trying to say—
Going to have mother unlock the basement door and go back to my village

Lol, no harm no foul. If someone is against subsidies I get that too. Especially since most don’t understand they are there to keep prices consistent not pad a farmers wallet. I also know there are those who do take advantage of the gov subsidies program. I didn’t mean to sound so confrontational either. Sounds like we agree on this but if not you’re entitled to your opinion. Most upland hunters I’ve met I’ve liked I bet It’d be the same with you.

Subsidies on the crop insurance are nearly textbook socialism, welfare, whatever.

The society assumes part of your risk, which lessens your exposure. Go down that road too far and there isn’t any motivation to produce. Sorry, but that’s just the way subsidized insurance works.

Same goes for flood insurance. Subsidize it enough and there is no motivation to not build in flood plains. There’s a myriad of federal programs to makes folks whole after a natural disaster.
