e collar question

I am looking to get a new e collar, I have used them before for my hounds, but how does the momentary stimulation work, do you press and hold and it gives a short correction, can't you do the same thing with continuous and just not hold it very long, I would like to buy one to use for both bird dogs and hounds, so I need plenty of range, but don't want to pay for more features than I need,

My Dogtra collar has a "nick" button that delivers a shock of a split second duration; and it has a buttin that delivers continuous shock as long as it is held down.
