    Turn out the lights

We still have 11 days left in our quail season here in Texas. I’m taking a father/son quail hunting on Saturday, and this will be the young man’s first time to hunt quail with pointing dogs. No, I’m not a guide. I just get asked if I’ll take people bird hunting, a lot, which I always do...

    2023-2024 Wrap Up

Take this for what it’s worth, but on my way back from South Dakota this fall I talked to a guy in the new Casey’s convenience store in Liberal. He saw my pickup and dog trailer and asked where we’d been hunting. I told him South Dakota, and he said he was from the Liberal area and they’d been...

    Elkhart/

My daughter’s college roommate is from Elkhart and her family farms a lot of country. According to the roommate’s father, they have seen very, very few pheasants this fall. In his words, “it’s the worst he has ever seen”. I didn’t even ask about quail after hearing that report.

    English Pointer

Nice pup! If I were Lointer Man, I’d be taking a look at that one.

    English Pointer

You’re correct about the terrain we hunt out here, it’s big country with scattered cover. Most of the cover has thorns on it; mesquite, catclaw, prickly pear, etc. It takes a bigger running dog. My youngest dog is a son of Ch Skyfall and this will be his first full season. He was raised...

    English Pointer

I agree with both Elhew and GTTP. I think it depends on how you hunt and what you plan to hunt with them. I primarily use my Phantom Kennels dogs to quail hunt in west Texas where I live, and was thinking more from that perspective. I pheasant hunt a couple of times a year with them, and they...

    English Pointer

Contact Dan Hendrickson at Phantom Kennels in Abilene, Texas. Dan has been in the bird dog business for a long time and the genetics in his dogs run deep. http://www.phantomkennels.com/ I currently have 4 pointers that he raised.

How often do you encounter the law?

My group got checked by a pair of game wardens in South Dakota a couple of years ago. They were waiting on us where we’d parked our pickups. They checked to be sure everyone had the correct license and habitat stamp, and that was it. They didn’t even check the birds we had. One year in the...

    Rates of guides

My group hunts west river, every year, on a farming family’s properties. They have a really nice, fully furnished farm house we stay in. Everything is there for us to use except our food, drink, and hunting gear. We bring our own dogs and portable kennels and crates and they stay in an...

Moving out of the TX Panhandle

That’s going to be a dramatic change in climate, density of people, and traffic you’ll have to deal with! However, I understand the need to be closer to kids/grandkids. I quail hunted a lot this season out in the south plains and northern Permian of Texas, and it was alarming to me the...

    Lab Breeder - Dallas area

There’s a veterinarian that posts on another board I frequent that currently has a litter of all chocolate pups. I don’t believe they’re in the Dallas area but they are in Texas. They usually advertise pups once or twice per year. That’s all I know about the dogs, but the pictures of the...

Too late, the new 26” barrel came in last week and I’m extremely happy with the results.

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

Thank you for the information. I kinda thought that might be the case, that way they can sell you some of their chokes. They also may not have access to the correct tap to cut the proper threads for the Browning Invector chokes.

Mini report and a few observations/questions on cattails and roosting sites

We were in Kansas a few years back, in January, and a big snow had fallen and more was on its way. It was about mid afternoon, and we were driving down a dirt road southeast of Oakley, over in that Monument Rocks country and the road crossed a creek on a bridge (it may have been the Smoky...

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

I handled a new A5 Sweet 16 with the 26" barrel at Cabela's in Lubbock, Texas the other day, and I liked how it felt and handled. As I stated in my original post, the main reason I want the shorter barrel is so the shotgun will fit in the gun boots on my dog trailer. FYI for anyone...

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

That’s a lot cheaper than I expected it to be. Thank you for the information!

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

I’ve tried calling the dealers in my area, and so far no luck. I emailed customer service at Browning, but have not received a response yet.

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

I agree on the old Belgian made guns. I have a Belgian made Light 12, and wouldn't think about having it modified. However, as mentioned in the original post, this is a new Model A5 Sweet 16.

26" Barrel for New Browning A5 Sweet 16

I purchased one of the new Browning A5 Sweet 16 shotguns a few years back and absolutely love it, but there's one problem. The only one I could find had the 28" barrel. When you combine that barrel length with the length of the receiver, the gun is so long that it will not fit in the gun boots...
