    Gucci Time

There are times that really enjoy hunting just me and my dog. I also really enjoy sharing a hunt with one or two friends. Then again, I also really enjoy a well executed cornfield drive with a large group of friends. I seldom get to post and have to be one of the drivers as I have a bird dog...

    Preferred 20 Gauge Shell

Regarding the discussion on shot string, the following video is interesting and fits much of what has been discussed here. Take a look at the high speed video of shot striking the pattern board. Note, if you are relying on a long shot string to hit your target, you are not using the core of...

You think it should be illegal for more than one hunter to shoot at the same pheasant?

Should I feel bad cutting a stock?

Without hesitation, if that is gun that I wanted, I would have the stock cut and fitted with a 1" recoil pad to my length of pull. There is nothing to feel bad about. If it is your gun, get it fit to you with a proper recoil pad.

Lead shot ban (DFL introduced bills) opposed by MN State HS Clay Target League

I stated before that I doubt that this bill will pass in its present form. However, I do not doubt that lead, as a known neurotoxin, will be eliminated in many applications as effective substitutes become available. This may well happen in our lifetime. This has occurred many times in the...

    Favorite steel

I am curious, how many people really think they are skilled enough at wing shooting to consistently engage a moving target at 60 yards? I shoot a lot of sporting clays and if the target setters put out a 40 yard target, few people hit it consistently and many people bitch about it. 35 to 40...

Lead shot ban (DFL introduced bills) opposed by MN State HS Clay Target League

I sincerely doubt that the portion of the bill banning lead shot for target shooting will make it out of committee. I quit using nontoxic shot and bullets for my hunting several years ago. It makes no sense to me to inject a known neurotoxin into the food when effective substitutes are...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

I stopped cleaning pheasants while on a multi-day hunt several years ago. There is no reason to do so, as you have to leave a wing or leg attached anyway and it is a joy killing chore at the end of a day's hunt. We keep the birds whole, if it is cool enough we just leave them on the ground...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Several years ago, I used to waterfowl hunt with a guy that would shoot over his limit and tell me that I had to count the extra birds as part of my limit. One morning we were hunting with new guy and as we were setting decoys, this the offender was bragging about a recent hunt where he shot...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I do not recall where the rest of that pattern ended up. I shot that target 4 years ago. I found it in my files the other day as I was working up a turkey load for this spring. I recently shot a 1 1/8 oz #4 steel pattern that is denser and more even at 40 yards than that bismuth is at 35...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

Regarding the OP, about 4 years ago, I purchased 2 boxes of Boss 2 3/4" 12 gauge 1 1/4 oz #6 copper plated bismuth with a stated velocity of 1350 fps. I shot some pheasants with it through a modified choke and it worked well. I also shot some through a full choke on a turkey target to see if...

    Brine a pheasant

I cannot specify an amount. I would simply mix a cup of salt with a cup of brown sugar, add black pepper as you see fit. Rub on the meat. Place the meat in a plastic or ceramic container in the fridge overnight. Place the extra brine in a ziplock or Tupperware container for later use.

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I have to admit that you have a valid point here. Hunters using 5 & 6 steel for pheasants are using undersized shot for the job, and are likely losing downed birds. Unfortunately this error is exacerbated by manufacturers such as Kent. https://kentcartridge.com/shotshell/upland-fasteel Their...

    Brine a pheasant

I think for most meats, a dry brine is best. A simple dry brine of 1/2 salt, with 1/2 brown sugar and some black pepper works very well. Rub the mixture on the meat and place in the refrigerator overnight. The meat absorbs the salt and sugar. The pepper deposits on the surface. The next...

    Ear protection while bird hunting

I have had these now for two seasons. I have hearing loss and significant tinnitus. I am trying to preserve what hearing I have. I have tried several electronic ear muffs. While they seem to work fine in a duck blind. The wind noise on the prairie is awful. The only hearing protection that...
