    The End?

Yesterday was too nice not to try. Once the big bunch was broke up we did ok. Two hours of walking cattails got our birds. Tough going for both dogs and hoo man’s though. Might try again tomorrow.

    The End?

Took a drive around yesterday. Didn’t see any cover that wasn’t completely blown full of snow. Even some of the county roads are still drifted in. Been awhile since the season essentially ended this early.

We are at 12-15 inches in the SW. Last Wednesday may have been the last hunt of the year.

    Been different

My wife and I have shot more huns and sharpies than we have since I retired in 2005. Surprisingly, pheasants have been very good or actually excellent. Hope folks are getting out. We have seen few hunters…fewer that had a clue.

    Pheasant Opener - Tomorrow

Excellent day today. Wife and I got zero bad looks from the pups and came home after a couple hours with six roosters and a hun.

    Giblets and Jibblets

Hearts, livers, and the little bit of meat under the wishbone get made into a pâté for snacks of a pheasant liver ragu pasta sauce here. Every once in a while a friend who has a gu gets some for the lizard.

    Pheasant breakfast sausage, round 1.

Pheasant jerky is also a very nice option. If you like the premixed spice versions, the Hi Mountain smoky citrus is tasty .

    Why full choke?

My dad always told the story of being given 5 shells. If he hadn’t brought back 5 things to eat when those shells were gone he got less shells the next time. For example, if he brought back 3...he got 3 shells and there was no system in place to get back to five shells.

    Pheasant breakfast sausage, round 1.

Pheasant leg meat makes all kinds of good sausage. I do the bacon add like you do. After cutting off the meat, roast the legs and make broth. After the broth is made the calf meat comes of the tendons pretty easily and can be used for tacos, enchiladas, chili...whatever.
