    Prairie Grouse and Sharptails question...

The corn field that the sharptail were feeding in was a "failed" crop that had cattle turned out in it so a lot of corn was on the ground. I doubt if they are interested in standing corn. The thistle seed heads were from a low growing native thistle.

I need help with spots for our trip

Gotta find your own 'honey holes". Good public land hunting is available, but no one in their right mind is going to give that information away. Most of us have put a lot of tire rubber and boot leather on the ground to find areas to hunt. Even then, things change from year to year. Crop...

    Prairie Grouse and Sharptails question...

I prefer to wait until later in the morning to hunt sharptail. They move around quite a bit to find food, then grit, before the settle in to a daytime loafing spot. The ones around here like sparse, hilly cover near crops, though crops are not necessary if the prefer the area. I even found one...

    Bells on flushers

I don't think I could hear a bell on a dead calm day unless it was an over-sized cowbell. Age isn't kind! I use grass/cover movement to find my lab, if I'm lucky. Several places I hunt the cover is over my head so I depend on her to find me. That is usually when the pheasant she's been working...

Don't worry, we'll all meet on aisle 3 where the Depends are eventually.

    My Pheasant Hunting Farewell

Wise decision, my friend. There comes a time to quit. I'm 75 with an ankle that has been fused three times and broken twice. That means the knee on that side is shot and the hip is going. I have at least this season left, if I'm careful. Yesterday I took a friend out hunting sharptail. My friend...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I agree. I read their copper shot hype with a grain of salt. "As good as bismuth" would have been a more honest approach. BOSS started out offering things the big boys didn't but their venture into copper makes me uncomfortable. Hopefully they get back on-track. I very much appreciate them as a...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I contacted BOSS about their copper shot. They specifically stated in their response that copper shot is legal anyplace that non-toxic shot is required. The testing device they have developed that is pending approval by the USFWS appears to allow testing without dismantling a shell. The coating...

    Rain hunting

You are also going to find that much of South Dakota soil has a lot of clay in it. Your boots will double in size and weight. I've had dogs build up so much clay/grass between their toes that they had difficulty walking. Had a pickup one time that generated "cones" off the hubcaps that were...

Do you add anything to your dogs water while hunting

I'm on my 6th generation of labs. I travel from North Dakota to New Mexico hunting. I've never found it necessary to supplement my dogs water, though I do try to carry water from "home" for the first few days to help them transition to all the different "flavors" of water they will encounter. It...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

Somehow something is not right. Copper shot with the defined coatings is approved, whether BOSS or someone else puts it into shotgun shells, yet BOSS hedges and says they are waiting on approval of their testing device. As far as I know, USFWS approved shot types not specific manufacturers...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I don't think anyone will answer right now. The Feds are shut down.

Yes, lead is OK on Walk In Areas in SD.

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

Be careful using lead shot in SD. Non-toxic shot is required on all State wildlife management areas, and all Federal lands except FS and BLM. That includes USFWS waterfowl production areas. I live in SD and have given up even carrying lead shot shells because, many times in a single day I'll...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I'm still hung up on BOSS copper shot not being approved pending USFWS approval of the tester BOSS has or is working on. As I read the USFWS approved non-toxic shot list, pure copper is not approved. This is what is on the USFWS approved list. Corrosion-inhibited copper ≥99.9 copper with...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I just reloaded 5 lbs of Roto metal bismuth. It is pretty "rough" stuff. If there was a round shot in that 5 lbs I didn't see it. Probably makes a great "spreader" load.

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

I had some time today so I waded through the Boss web information and the USFWS non-toxic shot regulations. I believe your recommendation is correct. Though the Boss copper shot appears to meet the USFWS standards for non-toxic shot, Boss hedges and states they "expect" an updated formal...

    Might be a bismuth shortage.

It is on the USFWS list of approved shot materials. I believe all States adopt the USFWS approvals. It does also list several coatings for copper shot. Hopefully BOSS has been working with the Feds as they develop their copper shot.

    hearing protection while hunting

Thanks. One more item on my pile of "hearing protectors" I guess.

    hearing protection while hunting

Have you tried these in the wind? Seems like everyone is making this type of ear protection now, but I am reluctant to bite after my experience with Axil and Walker.
