    Wild Phez

I got approval from the NRCS to do ‘early successional habitat’ work on 22.5 acres. That will begin this spring with a burn on 10 acres. The only thing that’s been done so far is disking in some firebreaks. Ha, yea. He’s got some competition tho… At least 4 different roosters on the property...

Anybody else seeing birds this winter. Numbers seem pretty solid in my areas. Hoping we have a good hatch this summer!

    Progressive Hunting Season Stats

I should do this. I used to track all my grouse woodcock flushes. But have slacked the last two years….Your kill rate on grouse of better than 1 per 6 flushes this year is quite good.

Upland Habitat Projects for the off-season?

My plans include: Spraying the 2 acre patch of plateau tolerant mix we planted last year at my parents place. Adding rows of American plum and Sargent crabapple to a spruce windbreak at my place as well as burning a 10 acre section there.

For sure, prices are in line for what it is. Impressive for a small town restaurant in a county of 10k population.

    Reed Canary Grass

12 oz Plateau in spring should should suppress it if the crop is plateau tolerant. Many NWSG’s don’t handle wet feet as well as reed canary though.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

Very Cool I'll be sure to wave at those birds as I drive past...Sorry to hear it's been so tough this year. I don't doubt its down out there but for us getting out in the wide open after grouse hunting the woods all fall is a good change of pace.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

For sure, walk-ins are tough hunting. I guess it all matters what your expectations are. Some of us never experienced “the good ol’ days’ in Kansas. Warm, dry weather last year made it tough getting anywhere near birds. But we saw 15-40 birds a day. Most of which we’re getting up well out of...

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I’ll be driving past Iowa from Michigan to NW KS Thursday. 4 full days of hunting plus hopefully get an evening hunt in Thursday. I bet we’ll see more than 3 birds a day hunting only walk-ins. Worst case scenario the dogs will get plenty of exercise tho…
