    CRP released.

So starting on 2 August CRP can be grazed or hayed 100 percent. Normally CPR can be hayed 1/3 each year after the third year. The Producer normally pays 1/4 of their CRP payment per acre hayed. In parts of South Dakota land owners got less than half the normal hay off their first two cutting...

How is everyone's spring habitat projects going?

Well, spent the day cleaning up weed patches and planting some fall covercrops a little early. If they don't make it I will replant. Just didn't want the weeds to go to seed and hate seeing black soil remain bare. First picture is a grassland waterway I'm working on trying to get junipers...

    More rain! Widespread!

We have pretty good hatch numbers in the NE part of the state, We only received a half inch of rain from 1 May to 20 Jun, so most farmers first cutting of alfalfa was half the bales of a normal year. The second cutting did get some rain but bale count was still down. This means Hay guys will...

    She Died On Sunday. 11/18/2018

About to have my German Short Hair Pointer put down since his quality of life has really dropped the past couple of months. He's 13 and been one of my best companions ever. Its gonna be a tough week. Glad to know I'm not alone. All we can do is love em and give them the best quality life we...

Rain in some of pheasant country…🙏🏻🤞

NE South Dakota, We got almost 4 inches over the past 4 days, our corn jumped 18 inches in that time. Today I saw two large groups of pheasant chicks on the road. So things are looking good at the moment.

Rain in some of pheasant country…🙏🏻🤞

We have only gotten 5/10ths of an inch since planting corn on 5 May. Amazing corn is hanging in there. Lots of mature birds around, haven't seen any Spring hatches yet. If the lack or rain trend continues expect a lot of Crp to be baled. Still praying for Rain here.

Hang on Here we go again!

Well I have seen a drop in the number of pheasants over the past 10 days. But this could be that some hill tops are now snow free and the birds could be spreading out. I still have pretty good numbers around the farmstead. Snow geese migration has just exploded in NE South Dakota. SDviking

Hang on Here we go again!

Well we have had a slow melt over the past two weeks. Most of the moisture has soaked in which is good news. Some hill tops are now exposed giving the pheasants and deer some feed relief. But Tonight NE South Dakota is suppose to get icing and tomorrow anywhere from 3 to 16 inches of snow...

    When to plant Sorghum

Soil temp is the key, We have planted Sorghum on the fourth of July and still had good hunting, granted it was on a wet year and on ground that the soybeans didn't come up. We have planted sorghum in six, twelve and eighteen inch widths, Pheasants love the ability to run down the rows even if...

    CATTAILS

Well, drain tile is being done rather quickly in NE South Dakota. So our landscape is changing. The only rule for a land owner to put in drain tile is to go to the NRCS and make sure a documented wetland isn't drained. No approval process and no documentation of who's land has been tiled...

    Removing Nest Predators

I would just get a few live traps, Put catfood or an egg in them for bait. Put them in locations you can see from the road or fence lines. See if you can hire a neighbor kid to drive by and check them from their vehicle. You will be surprise how many raccoons and skunks you can catch.

    2023 Nest Predator Bounty Program

One of the cattle feedlots a few miles away trapped over 100 Raccoons last year. They had 5 live traps out in the open and put an egg in them for bait. Was pretty amazing how many were there.

    2023 Nest Predator Bounty Program

I am probably in the minority here but I think the program helps a lot. High school kids trap a lot of these pheasant egg snatchers every year, in my county. Which in my opinion has helped our hatch numbers. Another indicator is that we come across very few skunks and raccoons when hunting in...
