Worst things that happened while hunting ?

Worst thing? Dogs getting into porcupines.

    Tools?

I had just spent about 30 minutes removing dozens of quills from his mouth, face and elsewhere. He didn't mind lying there an additional 10 seconds while I snapped a photo to show others a trick that could easily prevent a dog's death from a quill. I know two people who lost dogs to quills...

    Tools?

I used to use duct tape (see photo), but it rips out too much hair when you remove it. Nylon filament is perfect, and lightweight. Having a way to restrain their legs is a must if they get quills in their mouth and face, which they nearly always do. I have never run into a trap or snare...

    Ear protection while bird hunting

Yes, but I am suppressed so I don't hurt their ears. ;) I shoot 20-ga 1-oz loads at 1,200 or so. Been doing that for many years and it has not seemed to hurt my hearing yet. I want to be able to hear where the flush is coming from, etc. I have electronics for clay shooting but determining...

    Tools?

Needle-nose pliers for pulling quills, and, VERY IMPORTANT: small roll of nylon tape to hog-tie the dog with for the quill extraction.

    Browning 20ga A5

I don't ground-swat poorly hit birds. For one thing it usually endangers the dog but even if it didn't endanger Rocket it would deprive him of the opportunity to do what he loves most in life -- running down and catching a rooster. I have shot a few doubles, but only where feathers came off...

2024 National Pheasant Fest in Sioux Fall, who is going?

I need a Money Fest, with seminars to teach me how to get more money so I can take more than a month off and spend more on hotels in small SD towns. ;)

    Browning 20ga A5

I love shooting this A400 20 but I can't say I like carrying it all day, or the trigger-guard safety, compared to my O/U.

Pheasant Fact Friday - PF FB Repost

With it hitting 50 and 60 degrees now I'm hoping the pheasants are loving life and thinking about making chicks!

    Browning 20ga A5

I have too many clean misses to worry about whether a 16 might "pattern better" than my 20's do. :) If I put the "ounce of 5's" pattern on them they come down. If they come down they go in the bag. This was Rocket's 1st bird in 2019. 5 seasons, never anything but wild birds and we haven't...

    dog vest

Once I quit putting vests on my GSP's due to chaffing they learned how to avoid tearing themselves up, except for their faces. We take a day off from hunting now and then to let the face heal up. No way around it.

    Crock pot

You just need a wife! ;)

    Crock pot

Get one of these Precision Cookers. A THOUSAND times better to cook pheasant, deer, etc., in than a crock pot. $80 or $90 on e-bay, lots of other places on the 'Net. Tenderizes so well even the legs are wonderful. You do have to have a vacuum packer, but who doesn't these days? Set the...
