    Snow depths/minimum maintenance roads

Went out today. Gravel roads were passable for the most part. Didn't even attempt minimum maintenance roads. Snow seemed to be hard packed on the south side if tree belts and slough. Figured the wind from Sunday did that. The rest of the snow was pretty fluffy. Lot of close hens. Roosters seemed...

What was your best shot this year?

A week or two ago the dog and I were walking a slough and it wraps around a point. Couldn't see the other side around the corner. Hear a bird flush and start to look around. From over the other side of the point comes a rooster coming right over top of me, gaining as much altitude as he could. I...

    Public land newbie

Another tip. The third full weekend in November is opening weekend of east river rifle deer season. I always try to avoid that weekend. Too many people driving around in, and shooting from, trucks with high power rifles. Makes me nervous for my dog and myself.

    snow depth map?

It's all crusty right now too. If it'll hold you it's not bad. It you fall through every step it really sucks. Went l 6 miles the other day through it. About calf high then.

    Wasting birds

Three the first time and then five the next time. Both different locations, 100 miles apart.

    Wasting birds

On the inside of the fence. Can't get a tailgate there. It was purposeful waste of our game animals.

    Wasting birds

Nope, picked them up and looked them over. For sure just shot and left there. No attempt to even harvest meat.

    Poachers aren't hunters.

    Wasting birds

Just have to get a rant off my chest today. After hunting at least twice a week since resident weekend, minus last week for west river deer. I have come across two public areas with fully intact birds left there after being shot. This enrages me to no end. Why some clowns have to go out and...

Ear protection ideas from seeds etc…?

I've never had an issue with seeds but I rinse my labs ears out after every trip to flush anything else out. My first lab was prone to ear infections and this seemed to help. Not sure if it will flush out seeds or not. Your vet would be able to recommend a good flush for you.

    Philip Area

I drive that route a couple times a year on my way to go help at the land I deer hunt. The walk in on the east side of 73 usually has some birds around the tree belts. Not sure how a guy would go about getting close to them though. Haven't driven back in to see if there might be some more...

    The harvest is on!

Went out yesterday around Sioux Falls. Every field is wet. Saw zero combine activity.

    Flagging in the field

I've started using OnX and marking when I get to where the bird went down. So far it has helped. Comes in handy if you don't initially find the bird to circle down wind and know where your "spot" is.

    2023 Resident Opener

We named him Onyx. Had him out eight times in the period you're allowed to train on GPA's. Seems to be getting the hang of it. When I get the coller and vest out he knows it's time.

    2023 Resident Opener

Plan on getting the new puppy out for his first season. Did quite a bit of practice when the state allowed it from Aug to Sept. Hopefully he's gonna figure it out by the end of the season.
