Iowa IHAP

Iowa DNR is no longer funding the IHAP program. I have about 200 acres that will no longer be open to the public.

Be sure to thank the budget cutters in the state house.

Was your contract up and they wouldn't renew? I know they are out of money for new properties, but have not heard about them shutting down the program.

No money for renewal. They didn't pay the third year's maintenance costs, or the burn it was supposed to get. The not burning deal isn't totally on them, they couldn't find a contractor that would do it.

If they would have used less costly seeding mixtures they could have done a lot more acres. This "pollinator mix" is not appropriate for many sites, thistles end up moving in and it gets sprayed. They spent a lot of money on that mix, a predominantly grass based mix with some cheaper forbs would have done the job.

This is another reason why I have spoken about actually purchasing ground permanently, instead of all the failed programs they pour money into.
